Looking for area things to do? Experience the best of Moosehead Lake with our exclusive adventure-driven lodging packages, available only to guests staying at the Lodge. Choose from unforgettable options like our private Moose Safari, immersive Call of the Wild day trip, multi-day Land, Lake & Air exploration, customized guided fishing tours, or scenic day hikes. All excursions are led by seasoned local guides, and each package is designed to blend wilderness thrills with the comfort of returning each evening to your luxury suite. Canoeing & Kayaking Trips
Discovering the waterways! Of all the rivers to explore, the West Outlet on Moosehead Lake is one of the best. This is a great river for a relaxing paddle. The waterway consists of scenic ponds, quick water and class 1 white water (the lowest level). Along the shore you are also sure to spot nesting bald eagles, scampering beavers or otters, and even loons calling; you may encounter a mighty moose feeding on underwater vegetation. For the fisherman, this river offers some of the best bass and trout fishing in the region. It is not unusual to catch small-mouth bass in the 3-5 pound range or trout up to 14 inches, so be sure to bring your fishing rod and a license. Call for details.
ATV Riding
Challenge the rugged North woods terrain when you get out and explore the backcountry of the Moosehead Lake Region! The North woods is the largest undeveloped forest in the northeast. Maine ATV trails provide hundreds of miles of open terrain, incredible scenery and awesome riding for all skill sets. For the best experience, hire a guide to find those secret spots. All riders should wear long pants, durable footwear, and long sleeve shirts. Rates are based on single or double machines, ½ or full day tours. Private or small group trips are available. Moosehead Lake Swimming
For many, the image of Maine’s water is its 3,500 miles of coastline, yet inland there are more than 2,500 lakes and ponds across the state. The largest of which is our beloved Moosehead Lake. Beat the heat with summertime swimming fun in Moosehead Lake. The Lake’s clear, deep, cool water temperature reaches the mid-70s, making it the perfect place to cool off.
Popular Swimming Spots:
- Behind Mt. Kineo there is a well-loved pebble beach on the island with a rope swing and swimming area.
- Lily Bay State Park amenities include a swim beach, playground, 2 boat ramps with boat slips, and a 2-mile shoreline walking trail.
- Red Cross Beach in downtown Greenville has a lifeguard on duty during specific summer hours.
- The Greenville Junction Wharf includes a lakeside playground and beach.
- Monson Public Beach off Blanchard Road has a sandy beach with floats you can swim to and jump off of.
- Little Wilson Falls in Monson is part of the Appalachian Trail and include pools perfect for swimming. Please be careful: the rocks around the pools can be very slippery.
White Water Rafting
Mild to wild with breathtaking views and pure fun! You’ll find some of the best white water rafting in New England with breathtaking scenery and pure fun. There are several scenic trips to choose from, all different levels of difficulty from a mellow Class 1 to a challenging Class V.
The Kennebec is ideal for first time rafters and offers 12 miles of flats and deep water. Upper Kennebec gorge is where you’ll ride thrilling rollercoaster waves from 4 to 8 feet high. The Penobscot River is one of the most spectacular and challenging river experiences in the Eastern U.S. Rapids on the Penobscot River are short with sheer drops plunging into calm pools. The Ripogenous Gorge section is most turbulent, dropping over 70 feet per mile through a narrow, granite walled canyon with advance Class V rapids. The South Branch of the Penobscot Canada Falls Section may be Maine’s most challenging and exciting river run; it’s steep, narrow, technical, and unforgiving. Longfellow Mountain Range
Miles and miles of shoreline surrounded by the Longfellow Mountain Range make the views spectacular. There are over 80 islands in the lake, the largest being Sugar Island, just North of the Lodge. During the last glacial era, more than 1,200 natural lakes and ponds were carved into the landscape, varying in size from one acre ponds to Moosehead Lake, at 74,890 acres, one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in the United States. Mount Kineo
Mount Kineo, a great day hike, has 700 foot cliffs rising straight up from the Lake. It has attracted visitors for centuries, including American Indians seeking its flint called hornstone for making fires. Various wildlife species dwell among its cliffs and talus slopes including peregrine falcons and rare plants. Pebble Beach is a favorite swimming spot, and the there’s also a golf course on the island. Don’t forget to order the lodge picnic lunch to complete your day. Lily Bay State Park
Lily Bay State Park is a public recreation area located along the east shore of Moosehead Lake just 9 miles north of Greenville and 10 minutes from the Lodge. The 925-acre park offers fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Lily Bay State Park and the surrounding area offer exceptional wildlife and landscape viewing opportunities. Anglers come to to fish for Brook Trout, Land Locked Salmon, Lake Trout and Smallmouth Bass. There are miles of walking trails within the park, and it is a jumping off point for various day hikes in the neighboring territory. For those simply wishing to play and picnic, the park hosts a spacious beach complete with swimming area, playground, picnic tables, grills, and room to play.
