B52 Trip

On January 24, 1963, a US Air Force B-52C with 9 crew members crashed on Elephant Mountain in Greenville, killing seven. The 2 survivors endured -28° temperatures and 5 feet of snow before rescue. The crash site was found the next day using snowshoes, dog sleds, and snowmobiles. At the memorial, visitors see scattered wreckage, twisted metal, shredded wheels, rusted machinery, wires, and the partially intact tail cone- a somber reminder of those lost and the 2 who survived.
Access roads to the site can be rough, so we recommend going with a guide in a sturdy vehicle. Your guide will transport you from the Lodge, covering 8 miles of dirt roads and sharing stunning views of Moosehead Lake on the return. While this is a self-guided tour through the memorial site, your guide will remain close by for questions and assistance.

Tours last 2–3 hours, Available June-September depending on conditions. Package includes the paperback The Final Mission—The North Woods by Joseph R. Wax. $265 for two.

PACKAGE CANCELLATION POLICY: Trips and packages are paid in full at time of booking and are non-refundable 14 days prior to arrival. Tickets are purchased in advance when your trip is confirmed for Katahdin Steamship or white water rafting and are completely nonrefundable regardless of cancellation date.
