An Evening of Culinary Excellence, Dark Skies & North Woods Storytelling at The Lodge at Moosehead Lake

Firepit and mountain views

There is a certain kind of magic that settles over Moosehead Lake as the sun dips behind Big Moose Mountain. The air smells of pine and woodsmoke. Loons call across the water. Moreover, gathered around a crackling fire pit, you find yourself leaning in just a little closer — because the story being told is too good to
miss.

This summer, we are bringing that magic to life in a brand-new way. Welcome to Fireside Chats: Stories from a Maine Guide. This intimate, 4.5-hour evening event is hosted right here at The Lodge at Moosehead Lake — Greenville, Maine’s beloved boutique bed and breakfast and fine dining destination. Grab a cocktail, settle into your chair under the open sky, and let the stories wash over you.

Meet Your Storyteller: Bob Howe, Master Maine Guide

Every great evening deserves a great narrator. Bob Howe is one of the finest Maine has to offer. He is a Master Maine Guide with decades of experience in the deep North Woods. Furthermore, he has been weaving together the worlds of outdoor adventure and human connection for longer than most can remember.

Bob’s story begins in 1976, when he was just 20 years old. He would stop by the local VFW post and offer veterans rides out to the water, fishing tackle in hand. His only agenda was giving back. For years, he quietly invited servicemembers on free fishing and hunting trips across Maine, New York, and Vermont. No fanfare, no press release — just a guide, a rod, and open country.

In 1998, Bob and his wife purchased Pine Grove Lodge & Cabins in Pleasant Ridge, Maine. As a result, that quiet generosity blossomed into something much larger. Veterans and their families were welcomed to stay free of charge, with full guide service provided. Over time, a network of volunteers grew around Bob’s mission. What had once been a solo act became a coordinated program serving hundreds of servicemembers every year.

A Nonprofit Built on Generosity

Today, Pine Grove Programs is a fully licensed 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Additionally, 100% of proceeds go directly to providing veteran events. Those excursions have included turkey, black bear, whitetail deer, snowshoe hare, and coyote hunts. There have also been fishing trips across multiple states, antler shed hunting, mushroom foraging, Maine clam digging, and gold prospecting.

Bob also hosts the Maine Knows Howe podcast on YouTube, where his storytelling gift reaches audiences far beyond the campfire.

For years, Bob has guided guests at The Lodge at Moosehead Lake. He leads our celebrated Moose Safaris and the unforgettable Call of the Wild excursions. These have become signature experiences of a stay here. Now, his son Wyatt has joined the team. Together, they carry on the tradition of sharing tales of the elusive moose and the wild, quiet world of the Maine North Woods.

What to Expect: An Evening You’ll Talk About for Years

Fireside Chats: Stories from a Maine Guide is more than an event. It is an experience carefully crafted to capture everything we love about life at The Lodge at Moosehead Lake. From the first sip to the last story, every detail is designed to delight.

Cocktail Hour at the 368 Maine Bar

Your evening begins with a relaxed cocktail hour at our renowned 368 Maine bar. Browse a curated menu of wines, cocktails, craft mocktails, and local Maine beers. Additionally, pair your drink with savory nibbles while you mingle with fellow guests. Soak up the gorgeous views of Moosehead Lake from the deck. If you have never watched a Maine sunset over the water with a cold drink in hand, consider this your formal introduction.

Al Fresco Dining on the Lawn

As the evening deepens, we invite you to take your seat for dinner on our lawn. You will dine al fresco under the open Maine sky. Our talented culinary team — the same team behind our award-winning 368 Maine restaurant — serves a beautifully prepared menu. The menu features a grilled steak or salmon entrée, a
classic baked potato, and two thoughtfully chosen side dishes. It is both elegant and deeply satisfying — the perfect fuel for a night of great stories.

S’mores, Storytelling & Stargazing by the Firepit

After dinner, the real magic begins. Gather around the firepit as Bob Howe takes center stage beneath the famous Maine dark skies. These are some of the least light-polluted skies on the entire East Coast. With s’mores in hand and stars overhead, Bob shares decades of stories from the North Woods. You might hear
about moose encounters at dawn, legendary fishing mornings, and the quiet wisdom of a life spent outdoors. There will also be time for guest Q&A, so come with your questions ready.

The full experience runs approximately 4.5 hours — long enough to feel immersive, short enough to leave you wanting more.

Event Dates: July 26 & September 27   |   Cost: $125 per person / $250 per couple

A portion of all proceeds benefits Pine Grove Programs, supporting veterans across Maine.

adventures, Pine Grove has touched the lives of hundreds of service members.
